ABSTRACT This work proposes reflections on possible meanings constructed in the circulation of discourses that refer to the meaning of the term ‘competence,’ present in official documents that regulate the performance of Tilsp (Tradutores e Intérpretes de Libras e Português [Translators and Interpreters of Libras and Portuguese]). We start from the assumption that the meanings of a word are not completely static, but shift depending on the concrete situation and the interlocutors who use it. As a methodology, excerpts from official documents that regulate Tilsp’s activities were analyzed. By surveying possible interlocutors brought into the documents, we were able to verify that the meaning of ‘competence’ slowly shifts as the documents are produced in their respective times. Firstly, the use of the term points to a hierarchy, later, this meaning undergoes another shift towards the construction and delimitation of Tilsp’s professional work field. Finally, ‘competence’ moves to the labor market in the relationship between supplier and customer.

RESUMO Este trabalho propõe reflexões acerca de possíveis sentidos construídos na circulação de discursos que se referem ao sentido do termo ‘competência’, presente em documentos oficiais que normatizam a atuação dos Tilsp (Tradutores e Intérpretes de Libras e Português). Partimos do pressuposto de que os sentidos de uma palavra não são completamente estáticos, mas deslocam-se dependendo da situação concreta e dos interlocutores que a utilizam. Como metodologia, foram analisados excertos de documentos oficiais que normatizam a atuação dos Tilsp. Por meio do levantamento de possíveis interlocutores trazidos para os documentos, pudemos verificar que o sentido de ‘competência’ vagarosamente desloca-se à medida que os documentos são produzidos em seus respectivos tempos. Primeiramente, o uso do termo aponta para uma hierarquização, posteriormente, esse sentido sofre outro deslocamento para a construção e delimitação do campo de trabalho profissional dos Tilsp. Por fim, ‘competência’ se desloca para o mercado de trabalho na relação entre fornecedor e cliente.

Compreender a consolidação das Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais (DCN) demanda contextualizar a realidade de cada instituição. Sua implantação pressupõe (re) orientação do processo de formação na Saúde, com integração entre Projeto Pedagógico do Curso (PPC), Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) e envolvimento docente. Para captar a percepção docente sobre o alinhamento entre PPC e DCN, realizou-se estudo exploratório com metodologia qualitativa e os docentes respondendo a um questionário. Utilizou-se análise de conteúdo para construção de categorias temáticas. Os docentes de uma escola reconhecem que o PPC não está alinhado às DCN. Revelam trabalho docente determinado por perfil profissional e pessoal. Em outra escola, cuja reforma curricular já adota metodologia de ensino-aprendizagem ativa, os docentes se sentem apropriados às DCN. Concluímos, portanto, que as mudanças no PPC são processos que demandam tempo, dedicação e comunicação, ou seja, maior mudança na instituição de ensino.

To understand the National Curriculum Guidelines (NCG) it is necessary to contextualize the reality of each educational institution. The effective implementation of the guidelines requires the (re)orientation of the health education process; promoting integration between the course educational project (CEP); Brazilian National Health System (SUS) and professor engagement. We conducted a qualitative exploratory study using questionnaires to capture professors’ perceptions of the alignment between medicine CEPs and the NCG. Content analysis was performed to develop thematic categories. The professors at one school acknowledged that the CEP and NCG were not aligned and their responses revealed that teaching is determined by each professor’s professional and personal background. In another school whose curriculum reform adopted active teaching-learning methodologies, the professors felt a sense of ownership in relation to the NCG. We therefore conclude that the CEP change process requires time, dedication and effective communication or, in other words, greater change within the education institution.

Comprender la consolidación de las Directrices Curriculares Nacionales demanda poner en contexto la realidad de cada institución. Su implantación presupone una (re)orientación del proceso de formación en la salud, con integración entre Proyecto Pedagógico del Curso, Sistema Brasileño de Salud (SUS) y envolvimiento docente. Para captar la percepción docente sobre el alineamiento entre PPC y DCN, se realizó un estudio exploratorio, con metodología cualitativa, en el que los docentes respondieron a un cuestionario. Se utilizó un análisis de contenido para la construcción de categorías temáticas. Los docentes de una escuela reconocen que el PPC no está alineado a las DCN. Revelan un trabajo docente determinado por perfil profesional y personal. En otra escuela, cuya reforma curricular ya adopta la metodología de enseñanza-aprendizaje activa, los docentes se sienten apropiados de las DCN. Concluimos, por lo tanto, que los cambios en los PPC son procesos que demandan tiempo, dedicación y comunicación, es decir, un mayor cambio en la institución de enseñanza.

RESUMO O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar os projetos pedagógicos de dois cursos (PPC) de graduação em Medicina para determinar o grau de alinhamento às Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais (DCN) do ensino médico, visando compreender as diferenças decorrentes dos modelos curriculares adotados. Três especialistas em ensino médico foram convidados a analisar os documentos relativos aos projetos pedagógicos de curso (PPC) e preencher um instrumento de avaliação desenvolvido para avaliar adesão às DCN 2001, previamente publicado, com dez dimensões. O escore calculado por meio do instrumento classifica as escolas em relação ao grau de aderência às DCN, sendo valores de escore de 0 a ≤ 20%, de 20 a ≤ 40%, de 40 a ≤ 60%, de 60 a ≤ 80% e de > 80% considerados, respectivamente, divergente, fracamente aderente, regular aderência, aderente moderadamente e fortemente aderente. Também se realizou análise de conteúdo dos PPC para buscar evidências sobre os domínios no texto. Os escores totais, de 47,5% (IES1) e 82,5% (IES2), mostraram adesão regular do PPC da IES1 e acentuada do PPC da IES2 às DCN 2001. Essas diferenças se manifestaram especialmente nas dimensões da adequação da metodologia de ensino à concepção do curso, da inter-relação das disciplinas na concepção e execução do currículo e na existência de módulos ou temas integradores. As análises dos PPC mostraram que, de maneira geral, há aderência às DCN, em diferentes estágios. Observou-se boa confiabilidade desse instrumento utilizado na análise dos três avaliadores para ambas as instituições de ensino superior (alfa de Cronbach de 0,77 para a IES1 e de 0,75 para a IES2). A comparação das médias dos escores dos avaliadores por dimensão foi submetida a uma análise de significância com o Teste t de Student. Conclui-se que as duas escolas, em intensidade e por caminhos diferentes e respeitando a cultura institucional, incorporaram paulatinamente o arcabouço das diretrizes curriculares nacionais.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to analyze the pedagogical projects of two undergraduate medical education courses (CPP) to determine the degree of alignment with the National Curricular Guidelines (NDC) of Medical Education, aiming to understand the differences that arise from the curricular models adopted. Three medical education experts were invited to review the documents relating to the course pedagogical projects (CPP) and to complete an evaluation instrument developed to evaluate adherence to the previously published ten-dimensional DCN 2001. The score calculated from the instrument classifies the schools in relation to the degree of adherence to the DCN, with scores ranging from 0 ≤ to 20%, from 20 to ≤ 40%; 40 to ≤ to 60%; from 60 to ≤ to 80% and from > 80% considered respectively, divergent, poorly adherent, regular adherence, adherent moderately and strongly adherent. Content analysis of PPPs was also conducted to search for evidence on domains in the text. The total scores of 47.5% (Institution of Higher Education 1) and 82.5% (Institution of Higher Education 2), showed regular adherence of the PPC of Institution of Higher Education 1 and marked of the CPP of Institution of Higher Education 2 to DCN 2001. These differences were manifested especially in the dimensions of the adequacy of the teaching methodology to the course design, of the interrelationship of the disciplines in the conception and execution of the curriculum and in the existence of integrating modules or themes. The CPP analyzes showed that, in general, there is adherence to the DCN in different stages. We observed a good reliability of this instrument used in the analysis of the three evaluators for both institutions of higher education (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.77 for Institution of Higher Education 1 and Cronbach’s alpha of 0.75 for the Institution of Higher Education 2). The comparison of the means of the scores of the evaluators by size was submitted to a significance analysis with the Student t Test. It is concluded that the two schools, in intensity and in different ways and respecting the institutional culture, gradually incorporated the framework of the national curricular guidelines.

Antiretroviral therapy-induced paradoxical worsening of previously healed Mycobacterium haemophilum cutaneous lesions in advanced HIV infection

ABSTRACT Mycobacterium haemophilum is a nontuberculous mycobacterium that causes localized or disseminated disease, mainly in immunocompromised hosts. We report the case of a 35-year-old HIV-infected woman who presented with several enlarging cutaneous lesions over the arms and legs. Histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of a cutaneous mycobacterial disease. Mycobacterial analyses unveiled M. haemophilum infection. Six months after completion of a successful antimycobacterial treatment, she developed an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). This paradoxical relapse presented as tenderness, redness and swelling at the precise sites of the healed lesions and took place in the setting of significant recovery of the CD4 cell count (from 05 to 318 cells/mm 3 ). Microbiological analyses of these worsening lesions were negative, and they spontaneously remitted without the initiation of a novel antimycobacterial treatment cycle. M. haemophilum infection should always be considered as a cause of skin lesions in immunocompromised subjects. Physicians should be aware of the possibility of IRIS as a complication of successful antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients with M. haemophilum infection.

Resumo O abandono escolar é um problema complexo que afeta a maioria dos programas de graduação pós-secundária, em todo o mundo. O curso de engenharia industrial do Instituto ISVOUGA, localizado em Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, não é exceção. Este estudo usou um conjunto de dados contendo informações gerais dos estudantes e suas notas para as unidades curriculares já avaliadas. A partir deste conjunto de dados, foram selecionados dezessete preditores potenciais: cinco intrínsecos (gênero, estado civil, situação profissional, idade e regime de dedicação aos estudos – integral ou parcial) e doze extrínsecos (as notas em todas as doze unidades curriculares ministradas durante os dois primeiros semestres do curso). O objetivo principal desta investigação foi prever a probabilidade de um estudante abandonar o curso com base nos referidos preditores. Foi usada uma regressão logística binária para classificar os estudantes como tendo uma probabilidade alta ou baixa de não se reinscreverem no curso. Para validar se a metodologia utilizada é apropriada para o estudo em causa, a precisão obtida com o modelo de regressão logística foi comparada, por via de uma validação cruzada com cinco partições, com a precisão obtida pela utilização de três métodos muito utilizados em data mining: One R, K Nearest Neighbors e Naive Bayes. O modelo de regressão logística identificou quatro variáveis significativas na previsão do abandono escolar (as classificações nas unidades curriculares de ciência dos materiais, eletricidade, cálculo 1 e química). Os dois preditores mais influentes do abandono dos estudantes são não conseguir aprovação nas unidades curriculares menos exigentes: ciência dos materiais e eletricidade. Ao contrário do que seria de supor antes desta investigação, descobrimos que a não aprovação em unidades curriculares mais exigentes, como física ou estatística, não tem influência significativa no abandono escolar.

Abstract Student dropout is a complex problem that affects most post-secondary undergraduate programs, all over the world. The Industrial Engineering program of the ISVOUGA Institute, located in Sta. Maria da Feira, Portugal, is no exception. This research used a dataset containing students’ general information and the students’ marks for the already assessed courses. From this dataset, 17 potential predictors have been selected: five intrinsic predictors (gender, marital status, professional status, full/part time student, and age) and 12 extrinsic ones (the marks in all the 12 courses taught during the first two semesters of the program). The main goal of this research was to predict the likelihood of a student to dropout, based on the referred predictors. A binary logistic regression was used to classify students as having a high or low probability not to re enroll the program. To validate the appropriateness of the used methodology, the accuracy of the logistic model was compared, by means of a 5-fold cross-validation, to the accuracy of three classification methods commonly used in Data Mining: One R, K Nearest Neighbors, and Naive Bayes. Four variables were significant to the logistic model (the marks in Materials Science, Electricity, Calculus 1, and Chemistry). The two most influential predictors for student dropout are failing to pass in the less challenging courses of Materials Science and Electricity. Contrary to what we would think prior to this research, we found that failing in more challenging courses such as Physics or Statistics does not have a significant influence on student dropout.

RESUMO: A doença foi estudada em uma propriedade localizada no município de Castanhal, Pará, no período de dezembro de 2009 a dezembro de 2012. A propriedade possuía um plantel de 117 ovinos, 45 da raça Santa Inês e 72 Texel. Dos 72 ovinos da raça Texel, 56 estavam afetados. Os principais sinais clínicos observados foram alopecia, eritema, edema, hiperpigmentação e crostas nas orelhas, parte superior da cabeça e ao redor dos olhos. Em alguns animais as orelhas estavam deformadas, espessadas e com abscessos e/ou miíase. Histologicamente, as lesões caracterizavam-se por hiperqueratose ortoqueratótica, acantose, vacuolização e necrose das células da epiderme. Na derme havia infiltrado inflamatório composto principalmente por eosinófilos e macrófagos, edema e deposição de colágeno. Entre os insetos capturados foram identificados 294 exemplares de Culicoides (Hoffmania) plaumanni Spinelli, 57 de Culicoides (Hoffmania) insignis Lutz e 27 exemplares pertencentes a outras espécies de Culicoides. Conclui-se que C. plaumanni, C. insignis e, possivelmente, outras espécies de Culicoides estejam envolvidos na etiologia da dermatite alérgica nos ovinos da raça Texel no estado do Pará. Ovinos da raça Santa Inês que se encontravam na mesma área e nas mesmas condições não foram afetados, sugerindo menor susceptibilidade.

ABSTRACT: Allergic dermatitis was studied at a farm located in the municipality of Castanhal in the state of Pará, Brazil, from December 2009 to December 2012. Clinical and epidemiological data were obtained during monthly visits to the farm. Skin biopsies were performed for histopathological examinations, and insects were captured with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traps and live-bait entomological vacuum devices. The property housed a herd of both genders, with 45 Santa Inês sheep of different ages and 72 Texel adults. Of the 72 Texel sheep, 56 were affected. Of these, 24 exhibited alopecia, erythema, edema, and crust in the ears, on top of the head, and less often, around the eyes. In addition to the lesions described above, 14 animals exhibited hyperpigmentation of the ears and/or around the eyes and crust in the nose. Another 18 animals exhibited chronic lesions characterized by deformed and thickened ears, alopecia with hyperpigmentation, and in most cases, secondary bacterial infections with abscesses and/or myiasis. Some of these animals had lost part of their ears. Histologically, the lesions were characterized as orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, vacuolization, and necrosis of epidermal cells. An inflammatory infiltrate was present in the dermis, which was composed mainly of eosinophils and macrophages, some lymphocytes and mast cells, and few neutrophils, in addition to edema and collagen deposition. The Santa Inês sheep were not affected. Among the captured insects, 294 specimens of Culicoides (Hoffmania) plaumanni Spinelli, 57 specimens of C. (Hoffmania) insignis Lutz, and 27 specimens of other Culicoides species were identified. We conclude that C. plaumanni, C. insignis, and possibly other Culicoides species are involved in the etiology of allergic dermatitis in Texel sheep in the state of Pará. Santa Inês sheep in the same region and under the same conditions were not affected, which suggests lower susceptibility of these animals.

RESUMO: Strongyloides spp. são helmintos que podem parasitar o intestino de diversas espécies animais. Quatro espécies desse gênero têm sido descritas em felinos domésticos: S. felis, S. planiceps, S. stercoralis e S. tumefaciens. Trabalhos sobre o parasitismo por estrongiloides em gatos domésticos no Brasil são escassos. O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever os aspectos patológicos do parasitismo por Strongyloides spp. em dois gatos da região amazônica, no estado do Pará. Estes apresentavam numerosos nódulos esbranquiçados no intestino grosso, medindo cerca de 0,2 centímetros de diâmetro, que na microscopia eram constituídos por projeções do epitélio hiperplásico da mucosa para submucosa, formando túbulos contendo várias fêmeas adultas, ovos e larvas com morfologia compatível com a de Strongyloides spp. e margeados por larvas e remanescentes do aglomerado linfoide. As alterações histológicas foram compatíveis com as descritas no parasitismo por S. tumefaciens.

ABSTRACT: Strongyloides spp. are intestinal parasites that affect several animal species. Four species of the genus have been reported in domestic cats: S. felis, S. planiceps, S.stercoralis and S. tumefaciens . Reports describing infection by these nematodes in domestic cats in Brazil are scarce. This study aimed to describe the pathological features of Strongyloides spp. parasitism in two cats in the Amazon region, state of Pará, Brazil. During the necropsy of the two cats, numerous whitish nodules approximately 0.2cm in diameter were observed in the wall of the large intestine. The nodules were conspicuous in the colonic mucosa and exhibited a punctate aperture facing the center of the lumen. Microscopically, these nodules were formed by projections of the mucosal epithelium into the submucosa, which formed tubules lined with a single layer of columnar epithelium, with high cellularity and rare goblet cells, characterizing epithelial hyperplasia of the crypts. Adult nematodes and eggs observed in the lumen of the tubules were morphologically compatible with Strongyloides spp. Numerous larvae were also observed in the interstitium adjacent to the nodule. A mild lymphocytic infiltrate was observed neighboring the hyperplastic nodules. The histological changes are consistent with those described for S. tumefaciens infection.

ABSTRACT The Pampa biome is an important ecosystem in Brazil that is highly relevant to livestock production. The objective of this study was to analyze the potential use of vegetation indices to discriminate grazing intensities on natural grasslands in the Pampa biome. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) images from Jan to Dec, 2000 to 2013 series, were analyzed for natural grassland experimental units managed under high (forage allowance of 5 ± 2 % live weight – LW), moderate (13 ± 5 % LW) and low grazing intensity (19 ± 7 % LW). Regardless of intensity, the temporal profiles showed lower NDVI and EVI during winter, increased values in spring because of summer species regrowth, slightly decreased values in summer, especially in years when there is a water deficit, and increased values in the fall associated with the beginning of winter forage development. The average temporal profiles of moderate grazing intensity exhibited greater vegetation index values compared with low and high grazing intensities. The temporal profiles of less vegetation index were associated with lower green biomass accumulation caused by the negative impact of stocking rates on the leaf area index under high grazing intensity and a floristic composition with a predominance of tussocks under low grazing intensity. Vegetation indices can be used for distinguishing moderate grazing intensity from low and high intensities. The average EVI values can discriminate moderate grazing intensity during any season, and the NDVI values can discriminate moderate grazing intensity during spring and winter.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a aplicabilidade das principais categorias de risco e de fatores morfológicos no prognóstico tumor estromal gastrointestinal. MÉTODOS: cinquenta e quatro casos de GIST foram estudados retrospectivamente considerando-se os principais fatores prognósticos da neoplasia: graus de risco, topografia, tamanho, índice mitótico, necrose, subtipo histológico e imunofenótipo. Foi também verificada a sua associação e a redução da sobrevida global dos pacientes. RESULTADOS: a análise univariada mostrou que os tumores com número de mitoses maior que 5/50CGA (campos de grande aumento), a presença de necrose, de alto risco tanto para os sistemas propostos por Fletcher, quanto para Miettinen tiveram associação significativa com redução da sobrevida (p=0,00001, 0,0056, 0,03 e 0,009, respectivamente). Enquanto que os demais fatores analisados (tamanho, subtipo histológico, topografia e imunofenótipo) não tiveram tal associação. A análise multivariada (índice de Jacard) demonstrou que o grau de risco de Miettinen foi aquele que melhor se relacionou com o prognóstico. CONCLUSÃO: os critérios de risco de Fletcher e de Miettinen são importantes na avaliação do prognóstico de pacientes com tumor estromal gastrointestinal, principalmente este último, que se soma ao índice mitótico e a necrose tumoral.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the applicability of the main categories of risk and morphological factors in the prognosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors. METHODS: we retrospectively studied fifty-four cases of GIST, assessing the main prognostic factors of this neoplasis: risk levels, topography, size, mitotic index, necrosis, histological subtype and immunophenotype. We also verified their association and the reduction of overall survival. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that tumors with mitoses number greater than 5 per 50CGA (high-power fields), the presence of necrosis and a high risk for both the systems proposed by Fletcher and Miettinen had a significant association with reduced survival (p = 0.00001, 0.0056, 0.03 and 0.009, respectively). The remaining analyzed factors (size, histological subtype, topography and immunophenotype) had no such association. Multivariate analysis (Jacard index) showed that the Miettinen degree of risk was the one that best correlated with prognosis. CONCLUSION: the risk criteria of Fletcher and Miettinen are important in assessing the prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors, especially the latter, which adds to the mitotic index and the presence of tumor necrosis.

Objetivo: investigar o efeito da administração suprafisiológica de bcaroteno sobre parâmetros biológicos, laboratoriais e histológicos dos ratos espontaneamente hipertensos com tendência ao acidente vascular encefálico (SHR-sp).Métodos: utilizaram-se 36 ratos machos, distribuídos em três grupos, contendo cada um dos 12 ratos das linhagens Wistar, SHR e SHR-sp, subdivididos em seis animais controle e seis animais tratados com doses suprafisiológicas de âcaroteno por dois períodos de dez semanas, intercalados por uma semana de interrupção. No experimento foram avaliados diariamente o exame físico e a pressão arterial. Foi coletado sangue para dosagem sérica de malondialdeído; o fígado e as artérias carótidas para exame histológico.Resultados: alteração provisória na coloração dos pelos, diminuição significativa (p<0,0001) da pressão arterial (suplementação de 20mg de bcaroteno) e dos níveis séricos de malondialdeído (p<0,05) e aumento da quantidade de fibras elásticas na parede carotídea dos ratos SHR e SHR-sp.Conclusão: A suplementação suprafisiológica de bcaroteno não causou efeitos tóxicos, apresentou resposta positiva na modulação da pressão arterial e diminuição na concentração sérica de malondialdeído. Não foram encontradas alterações morfológicas significativas nos grupos estudados, exceto um aumento no número de fibras elásticas da camada muscular carotídea sugerindo elastose nos ratos SHR e SHR-sp.

Objective: to investigate the effect of administration of supraphysiological âcaroteno on biological parameters (ectoscopy and blood pressure), laboratory (malondialdehyde) and histological (liver and carotid arteries) of spontaneously hypertensive rats prone to stroke (SHR-sp).Methods: we used 36 male rats were divided into three groups, each containing 12 rats Wistar, SHR and SHR-sp, subdivided into six control animals and six animals treated with supraphysiological doses of âcaroteno for two periods of ten weeks interspersed with one week interruption. In the experiment were assessed daily physical examination and blood pressure (plethysmography). At sacrifice, blood was collected for measurement of serum malondialdehyde, liver and carotid arteries for histological examination.Results: temporary change in color of the fur, decreased significantly (p<0.0001) blood pressure (20mg supplementation âcaroteno) and serum levels of malondialdehyde (p<0.05) and increased amount of elastic fibers in the carotid wall of SHR and SHR-sp.Conclusion: supplementation of supraphysiological âcaroteno caused no toxic effects, showed positive response in the modulation of blood pressure and lower serum malondialdehyde. No significant morphological changes were found in both groups, except an increase in the number of elastic fibers in the muscle layer carotid suggesting elastosis in SHR and SHR-sp.

Introdução: Um sistema nervoso autônomo disfuncionante tem sido relacionado a eventos cardiovasculares em pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC), com vários estudos demonstrando redução da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca e o desenvolvimento de arritmias complexas nestes pacientes. Objetivo: Avaliar o balanço simpático-vagal em pacientes com DRC em tratamento conservador. Métodos: Em estudo transversal, foram avaliados pacientes com DRC estágios 3, 4 e 5 não dialítico pareados para indivíduos saudáveis. Todos os voluntários foram submetidos à monitorização contínua da frequência cardíaca durante, por 20 minutos na posição supina (período pré-inclinado), seguido de inclinação passiva a 70 graus por mais 20 minutos (período inclinado). A análise espectral da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca foi usada para se obter a baixa frequência normalizada (LF nu), indicativa da atividade simpática, e a alta frequência normalizada (HF nu), indicativa da atividade parassimpática. A razão entre essas duas variáveis (LF nu/HF nu) é representativa do balanço simpático-vagal. Resultados: Durante o período pré-inclinado, não houve diferença significativa da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca entre os pacientes com DRC e o grupo controle. No entanto, após a inclinação, os pacientes com DRC apresentaram menor atividade simpática, maior atividade parassimpática e menor balanço simpático-vagal quando comparados com o grupo controle. Comparados com pacientes em estágio 3, pacientes em estágio 5 apresentaram menor razão LFnu/HFnu, sugerindo piora do balanço simpático-vagal nos estágios mais avançados da DRC. Conclusão: Pacientes com DRC não dialíticos apresentam diminuição da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca, compatível com disfunção autonômica cardíaca precoce no curso da DRC.

Introduction: A dysfunctional autonomic nervous system (ANS) has also been recognized as an important mechanism contributing to the poor outcome in CKD patients, with several studies reporting a reduction in heart rate variability (HRV). Objective: Evaluate the sympathovagal balance in patients with chronic kidney disease on conservative treatment. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, patients with CKD stages 3, 4 and 5 not yet on dialysis (CKD group) and age-matched healthy subjects (CON group) underwent continuous heart rate recording during two twenty-minute periods in the supine position (pre-inclined), followed by passive postural inclination at 70° (inclined period). Power spectral analysis of the heart rate variability was used to assess the normalized low frequency (LFnu), indicative of sympathetic activity, and the normalized high frequency (HFnu), indicative of parasympathetic activity. The LFnu/HFnu ratio represented sympathovagal balance. Results: After tilting, CKD patients had lower sympathetic activity, higher parasympathetic activity, and lower sympathovagal balance than patients in the CON group. Compared to patients in stage 3, patients in stage 5 had a lower LFnu/HFnu ratio, suggesting a more pronounced impairment of sympathovagal balance as the disease progresses. Conclusion: CKD patients not yet on dialysis have reduced HRV, indicating cardiac autonomic dysfunction early in the course of CKD.

Baccharis coridifolia é uma planta tóxica que possui forte poder aversivo em ruminantes. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram induzir aversão condicionada a Ipomoea carnea var. fistulosa em caprinos utilizando B. coridifolia como agente aversivo e comparar a eficiência desta aversão com a aversão induzida por cloreto de lítio (LiCl). Treze cabras foram divididas em dois grupos: o Grupo 1 com seis cabras foi avertido com 175mg/kg de peso corporal (pc) de LiCl e o Grupo 2, com sete cabras, foi avertido com 0,25g/kg de pc de B. coridifolia seco. Todas as cabras foram avertidas no dia 1 logo após a ingestão de I.carnea. A aversão foi repetida nos dias 2, 3 e 7 nos caprinos que ingeriram qualquer quantidade de I. carnea, utilizando-se o mesmo procedimento do dia 1. Os caprinos de ambos os grupos foram desafiados nas baias nos dias 23 e 38 após o último dia da aversão e desafiados na pastagem nos dias 11, 15, 18, 20, 22 , 25, 27 e 29 após o último dia da aversão. Posteriormente os caprinos foram desafiados a cada 15 dias na pastagem até o 330º dia após o último dia da aversão (7º dia). Duas cabras do Grupo 1 ingeriram I. carnea no primeiro dia do desafio na pastagem, quatro dias após o ultimo dia da aversão nas baias. Além disso, outra cabra do mesmo grupo reiniciou a ingestão da planta no 18º dia e outras duas no 20º dia. Uma cabra do Grupo 1 que nunca havia ingerido a planta após a aversão morreu no 55º dia. Uma cabra do Grupo 2 começou a ingerir I. carnea no primeiro dia de desafio na pastagem e uma segunda reiniciou o consumo da planta no 182º dia. No final do experimento no 330º as cinco cabras avertidas com B. coridifolia permaneciam sem ingerir a planta. Estes resultados sugerem que B. coridifolia ou algum princípio ativo dessa planta pode ser utilizado para induzir aversão condicionada a plantas tóxicas. A utilização de B. coridifolia como agente aversivo é aparentemente mais barato e mais fácil de ser utilizado do que o LiCl, o qual requer o uso de sonda oro-gástrica e pessoal qualificado para sua implementação.

Baccharis coridifolia is a plant that induces strong conditioned food aversion in ruminants. This research aimed to induce a conditioned food aversion to Ipomoea carnea var. fistulosa in goats, using B. coridifolia as an aversive agent, and to compare the aversion induced by this plant with the aversion induced by lithium chloride (LiCl). Thirteen goats were allotted into two groups: Group 1 with six goats was averted with 175mg/kg of body weight of LiCl and Group 2 with seven goats was averted with 0,25g/kg of bw of dried B. coridifolia. All goats were averted on day 1 after the ingestion of I. carnea. The aversion procedure with LiCl or B. coridifolia in goats from Groups 1 and 2, respectively, was repeated in those goats that again consumed the plant during tests on days 2, 3, and 7. The goats of both groups were challenged in pens on 23 and 38 days after the last day of aversion and challenged in the pasture on days 11, 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27 and 29 after the last day of aversion. After this period goats were challenged every 15 days on pasture until the 330º day after the last day of aversion (7th day). Two goats from Group 1 ingested I. carnea on the first day of the pasture challenge, 4 days after the last day of aversive conditioning in the pen. In addition, another goat in Group 1 started to consume the plant on day 18, and other two goats ate it on day 20. One goat in Group 1 that had never eaten I. carnea died on day 155. One goat from Group 2 started to ingest I. carnea on the first day of the pasture challenge, and a second goat started to consume this plant on day 182. At the end of the experiment, on day 330, the other five goats averted with B. coridifolia remained averted. These results suggest that B. coridifolia or an active compound from the plant could be used to induce aversion to toxic plants. Using B. coridifolia would be cheaper and, particularly in flocks with large number of animals, possibly easier than using LiCl, which requires the use of oral gavage and qualified personnel for its implementation.

O progresso da seca da haste em hibisco foi estudado em quatro épocas e dois métodos de plantio. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições e os oito tratamentos foram dispostos em esquema fatorial 4 (épocas de plantio) x 2 (métodos de plantio), sendo: semeadura direta em 05/02/03, 06/03/03, 05/04/03 e 15/05/03; transplantio de mudas em 24/12/02, 25/01/03, 24/02/03 e 25/03/03. Imediatamente após o surgimento dos sintomas, avaliou-se a doença a cada 10 dias até o final do ciclo, aos 205 dias, calculando-se a porcentagem de hastes infectadas por planta. Calculou-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso para a incidência (AACPI). As curvas de progresso da doença dos tratamentos foram submetidas ao ajuste dos modelos linear, exponencial, monomolecular, logístico e Gompertz. Houve interação significativa de métodos e épocas de plantio na incidência da doença. Constatou-se menor incidência da seca da haste em transplantio de mudas comparado à semeadura direta em todas as épocas de plantio. Verificou-se aumento da incidência proporcionado pelo atraso na época de plantio nos dois métodos. O modelo exponencial foi o que melhor descreveu o comportamento da doença em todos os tratamentos. As diferenças estatísticas entre os tratamentos, considerando a taxa de progresso, não refletiram a intensidade da doença no campo. Na mesma época de plantio, as quantidades inicial e máxima da doença, observadas na semeadura direta, foram superiores aos tratamentos referentes ao transplantio de mudas, coerentes com os valores da AACPI. Registrou-se uma relação direta entre queda de temperatura e aumento da incidência da seca da haste.

Stem blight progress in roselle was studied in four periods and two planting methods. Experimental design was in randomized blocks with four replicates and eight treatments in 4 (periods) x 2 (planting methods) factorial arrangement: direct sowing on 05/02/03, 06/03/03, 05/04/03, 15/05/03 and seedling transplanting on 24/12/02, 25/01/03, 24/02/03, 25/03/03. Immediately after the emergence of symptoms, the disease was evaluated at every 10 days until the end of the cycle, at 205 days, and the percentage of infected stems was calculated. The area under the progress curve of the incidence (AUPCI) was calculated. The disease progress curves for the treatments were adjusted to linear, exponential, monomolecular, logistic and gompertz models. There was significant interaction of methods and planting periods for the disease incidence. Lower incidence of stem blight was noted for seedling transplanting compared to direct sowing in all planting periods. There was increased incidence due to the delay in planting for the two methods. The exponential model best described the disease behavior in all treatments. The statistical differences among treatments considering the progress rate did not reflect the disease intensity in the field. In the same planting period, the initial and maximum quantities of the disease, at the direct sowing, were superior to the treatments related to the seedling transplanting, consistent with the AUPCI values. A direct relationship was recorded between temperature fall and increased incidence of stem blight.
